You could read any strip at random and still get entertained by calvin being a smartass brat.
What's even better, the creator knew when to quit. When he was done with it. It wasn't hyper-commercialized like other comic strips. It had true integrity.

Sometimes I do think more could have been done with the series and I wish at the very least he found the right people to make an animated series or movie out of but again I totally understand why he didnt.
I do feel sometimes Watterson was too old fashion for his own good. I know he said he was never a big fan of comic books themselves but like....you're litterally writing a comic strip yourself. Kinda hard not to at least check out the medium here and there. I do imagine though hes pretty much proven right given how much of a cash cow the MCU and DCAU is.
Comic Books despite having a very underground scene, was mostly just marvel and DC superhero stuff since the 50s when he was making the comic strip. You had more creative freedom if I recall, believe it or not, making a comic strip compared to other kinds of comics.
And I'm glad he retired when he knew when to call it quits. Because he took at look at garfield and knew mass merchandising was not what he wanted to do.
@xeiavica If I also recall he was asked to say something nice about Jim Davis to which he said " I like that he's consistent"
I know also Calvin and Hobbes had a lot of preaching about commercialism which he wasnt wrong but like damn god forbid someone also wants a Hobbes plush... Though the peeing calvin decal is repulsive and insulting
It's more like he wasn't happy with commercialism similar to how Charles Schulz did with peanuts. It gets distorted by calvin who I remind you is a child so he lets calvin be calvin to make a joke around what he thinks.
@xeiavica To give credit to Schulz I dont think there was EVER a bastardization of the Peanuts gang that I know. Like for instance a 90s itteration where they're all gangsta and talk modern and slang that sort of thing. Even the recent peanuts movie showed respect to the source material
